Spiral Zipper Project
The Spiral Zipper project is currently being patented so details have not been posted.
I had the opportunity to present this work a ICRA 2016 conference in Stockholm, Sweden. The conference paper can be found here, and an IEEE Spectrum article about the spiral zipper is here.

Summer 2014 ModLab Work - S.M.O.R.E.S.
|
In addition to my work with the spiral zipper, I also supported another project in the lab. S.M.O.R.E.S. (Self-assembling MOdular Robot for Extreme Shape shifting). This modular robot was designed by a graduate student Jay Davey and is a very novel design with 4 degrees of freedom in a very compact package. Version one of the module is demonstrated in the video to the left.
Jay spent the spring working on the design for the next generation of the SMORES module, but summer employment kept him from seeing the module through to manufacturing. Since I was staying for the summer, I was asked to see the design through the manufacturing of six modules on the CNC Machines. Since I was working on my other project, I created the GCode files with the CAM Program SolidCAM and advised other students working in the machine shop cutting the parts. In addition to the manufacturing I also helped to finish up some loose ends in the design including mounting for the electronics boards and finding/fitting batteries. |
